Nike’s New Kicks.

We first met when I watched the Knicks struggle against the mighty Bulls. We took it to the next level when I saw your swoosh stamped on Andre Agassi’s forehead. It was only a matter of time until you would be mine and I would be yours. We sealed the deal two years later when I purchased my first pair of Nike Dunks and grew old together when I resigned to getting a running sensor. It was then that I knew our love affair was for keeps.

This ever changing love affair is a testament to Nike’s success at being omnipresent at every life stage and innovating with the pace of cultural shifts. Nike is doing it again this June and setting the bar for sports digital integration when it releases its first sensor-enabled basketball shoe, Nike Hyperdunk+.  Nike Hyperdunk+ shoes are outfitted with sensors on both left and right shoes that calculates the timing of foot pressure to measure how hard you’re playing, how fast you’re moving, and how high you’re jumping (they claim to be 96% accurate).  These shoe sensors will store the data locally until the data is transmitted to an iPhone via Bluetooth technology. Once it’s been retrieved users can view how they’ve fared against friends with the global leaderboard app and share their accomplishments on Facebook or Twitter.

Take a look….

For those who aren’t basketball nuts, Nike is also releasing Nike+Training, which is a shoe and app that supplies drills, challenges, and sensors to measure performance and provide real-time feedback.

Take a look….

Since 1996 with the Nike+ sensor iPhone App Kit (a sensor that you insert into your shoe that measures how many calories you’ve burned and how far you’ve ran), Nike has been integrating sports with the world’s growing interest in digital space.  Now at the height of social media/digital integration, Nike is leading the trend, and driving athletic performance with social digitized products. I’m interested to see how other industries will follow suit and transform their products into integrated product experiences.
